An Evaluation of 0-Group Abundance Indices of Barents Sea Fish Stocks
نویسندگان
چکیده
The International 0-group fish survey in the Barents Sea (1965-2002) aimed to give initial indication of the recruiting year class strengths. Since 2003 the 0-group survey has been a part of a Joint Norwegian-Russian ecosystem survey of the Barents Sea, conducted by IMR (Norway) and PINRO (Russian Federation). The electronic 0-group databases were missing some data and contained errors, therefore the databases have been quality checked and corrected for the period 1980-2006. Two separate sets of 0group indices were re-estimated, both with and without correction for capture efficiency, using a stratified sample mean approach, and 0-group indices were correlated with other appropriate abundance indices. The exclusion of errors from the database has improved our confidence in the indices and analysis. In general, the 0-group indices seem to be reliable predictors of year class strengths and are adequate to use as input in stock assessmentmodels and recruitment studies.

Biomass of Scyphozoan Jellyfish, and Its Spatial Association with 0-Group Fish in the Barents Sea
An 0-group fish survey is conducted annually in the Barents Sea in order to estimate fish population abundance. Data on jellyfish by-catch have been recorded since 1980, although this dataset has never been analysed. In recent years, however, the ecological importance of jellyfish medusae has become widely recognized. In this paper the biomass of jellyfish (medusae) in 0-60 m depths is calculat...
متن کاملFeeding and Food Consumption by the Barents Sea Skates
Stomach content data were used to study spatial, seasonal and interannual dynamics of feeding of the thorny skate Raja radiata. Data on food composition for other Barents Sea skates ( Northern skate – R. hyperborea, Round skate – R. fyllae, Blue skate – R. batis, Spinytail skateR. spinicauda, Long-nosed skate – R. oxyrhynchus and Sail ray R. lintea) are presented. The diet of thorny skate of di...
متن کاملComparison of the biophysical and trophic characteristics of the Bering and Barents Seas
The eastern Bering Sea and the Barents Sea share a number of common biophysical characteristics. For example, both are seasonally ice-covered, high-latitude, shelf seas, dependent on advection for heat and for replenishment of nutrients on their shelves, and with ecosystems dominated by a single species of gadoid fish. At the same time, they differ in important respects. In the Barents Sea, adv...
متن کاملThe combined effect of transport and temperature on distribution and growth of larvae and pelagic juveniles of Arcto-Norwegian cod
Temperature has been identified in field studies as the physical parameter most influential on growth and recruitment of Arcto-Norwegian cod. However, it has been pointed out by many authors that temperature in this context has not only direct effects on the cod, but also indirect effects through lower trophic levels. Moreover, it has been said that temperature might also be a proxy for other c...
متن کاملDemersal Fish Assemblages and Spatial Diversity Patterns in the Arctic-Atlantic Transition Zone in the Barents Sea
Direct and indirect effects of global warming are expected to be pronounced and fast in the Arctic, impacting terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems. The Barents Sea is a high latitude shelf Sea and a boundary area between arctic and boreal faunas. These faunas are likely to respond differently to changes in climate. In addition, the Barents Sea is highly impacted by fisheries and other ...
